Spark of Hope #124 – I discovered something quite extraordinary as I was browsing through old photos with my parents. Mom was looking on, as she sat next to me and dad, holding onto her “Busy Betty.” The zipper, button, snap and Velcro strap on the doll keeps mom busy, hence the name Busy Betty! Seriously though, Betty does a great “job” of giving my mother a sense of purpose, as well as naturally easing anxiety that frequently comes with Alzheimer’s. Mom likes to carry Betty everywhere and her care-staff are terrific at making sure Betty is in tow. Her doll has even held up through numerous (necessary) run-in’s with the washer and dryer! In all our turning of the pages on family photos, I had never noticed a particular one that prominently stood out yesterday. As a little child, there was my mother 83 years ago, with a doll very similar to the one she now treasures. By some incredible coincidence – miracle! – I had found/bought a replica of her childhood doll without even knowing it. No wonder she loves her Busy Betty so much. All at once, I felt as though butterfly kisses from God brushed my cheek.
P.S. Interestingly, I found Busy Betty in a vintage shop – like a blast from the past at just $6.00! There are similar (reasonably priced) girl and boy dolls available online at ebay.
Hope is like a spark; if the conditions are right, it can spread like wildfire. Hope feeds the soul, ignites passion, and inspires others. Tucked inside each of us is a child-like spark that says: never forget to dream, play and imagine. HOPE is the extraordinary spark that says Huge Outcomes are Possible Everyday!
