Spark of Hope #109: What’s the healing power in a dose of affection? Knowing that 60% of nursing home residents go without visitors, I intentionally reach out to other residents at my mom’s care center. Ask “how are you?” Make eye contact and wait for an answer. Touch a shoulder with a gentle “hello.” Give a compliment about fashion or hair style. Extend an invite to play a game. Be open to a random chat. Recently, a woman approached me at the door to mom’s room: “where did you get that hat?” “Cracker Barrel,” I replied. She retorted, “well, they stole it; that was my idea!” Instead of correcting her, I just said, “well then, they should give you a hat.” She agreed and went on her way. Over the next week, Mom’s hat went missing several times over. Guess who? I approached the Director and offered two solutions. #1: I take the hat home. #2: I go get the woman a copy-hat. We agreed on choice #2. Now guess who’s smiling and happy to see me? My Mom and her fellow resident hat-wearer! That’s the difference a dose of affection makes. Huge Outcomes are Possible Everyday — with HOPE and a hat!
Hope is like a spark; if the conditions are right, it can spread like wildfire. Hope feeds the soul, ignites passion, and inspires others. Tucked inside each of us is a child-like spark that says: never forget to dream, play and imagine. HOPE is the extraordinary spark that says Huge Outcomes are Possible Everyday!
