Spark of of #86 – A comic stuck with me after seeing it over twenty years ago. The caption read: “convention for perfect parents.” The illustration: hundreds of empty auditorium seats, with one man sitting there alone.
In recent months, I’ve been posting some perfectly wonderful moments with my parents. Some readers may falsely assume that a perfect childhood led to such moments. In reality, I spent my early adulthood putting my parents’ imperfections under a microscope — dissecting painful disappointments. Then, during a retreat, I received a chunk of timeless wisdom: There is no perfect parent, other than our heavenly Father. That aha-moment led me to write a letter to my mother, and then to my father. I forgave each for their mistakes and short-falls. It now seems all part of a grander plan. My parents’ recent move to my neighborhood has meant fresh parent-child moments, appreciation of similarities and differences, and understanding over short-falls. I believe this journey is making me a better person … and it’s making Huge Outcomes Possible Everyday … with HOPE the gift of forgiveness is perfect for Father’s Day, and beyond!
…And two years later, my baby brother joined our family portrait. 🙂
Hope is like a spark; if the conditions are right, it can spread like wildfire. Hope feeds the soul, ignites passion, and inspires others. Tucked inside each of us is a child-like spark that says: never forget to dream, play and imagine. HOPE is the extraordinary spark that says Huge Outcomes are Possible Everyday!
