Spark of Hope #108 – Blessed. Happy. Surprised. Those were the top three adjectives Sue Campbell cited in her recent Forbes post entitled What’s Your Plan If You Live to 100. She wrapped in the results of a United-Healthcare poll of 104 boomers and centenarians. She went on to highlight shared traits among the 100-year-old’s. The list got me thinking about my dear friend Tina. I sent out a tweet about her just yesterday after we bumped into one another at Publix. We enjoyed an overdue hug-fest and chatted about family, travels, health, and her upcoming 100th birthday. She’s planning a big bash at church with family and friends. We made a mental note to schedule “tea time” as we parted ways. I felt incredibly blessed and happy in seeing my old friend (no pun intended!). I wasn’t surprised to see that she still keeps the fire burning inside. She has all the fuel needed to keep it lit — grateful about all life has to offer, blessed by her relationships, positive attitude, good health, and plans for more time with family and friends. We hear a lot about dementia in the elderly. While awareness and support are critically important, it’s also important to not lose sight of the incredible fact that nearly half our nation’s “centenarians” are enjoying healthy, independent lives, including Tina.
