Facing Fear and Living the Life You Imagined

I nearly drowned at six years of age. My feet seemed glued to the bottom of the pond. I felt myself sinking into its muddy floor. Then, with spontaneous instinct, Whiskers came to the rescue! Our family dog saved my life! It would take two more episodes of near-drowning before I gathered the courage to “take on” water. This year marks my 20th anniversary of facing my fear. Thanks to my husband’s help and encouragement, I’m an avid lap swimmer. Water now represents a sacred space. I visualize stress drowning away (better it than me!) as I glide through beautiful possibilities. My swim is a product of the thoughts I create.

I revisited my vulnerability in watching our grown son take on a sailing excursion. Claiming a dream, he and a friend had long tucked away, they let go of the “what if’s” and plunged into splendid isolation. Together with the sailor/owner and his two cats, they began filming a stint of “simply living adrift”.

What’s holding you back from living the life you imagined? Fear is a choice. Fear is not real. You only get one life but you get plenty of chances. Take them. Stroke the possibilities.
